… achievements so far The council has been working to reduce carbon emissions and to adapt the city to the changing climate for a number of years. Well before the Climate Emergency we had set long-term targets to: • halve city-wide carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions6 from their 1990 levels by 2025, and • halve the council’s own carbon emissions from their 2008/09 levels by the same year…

… and the council, the majority of the reduction so far has been the result of lower emissions from electricity use. Some of this has been achieved by local action to increase energy efficiency – for example installing LED lighting – while the rest has come from the decarbonisation of the national grid. The opportunities for further carbon emissions reduction over the coming years are discussed…
